GRENED

GRENED attended the 2nd EU-Caribbean Global Gateway Conference on Sargassum at the Radisson Beach Resort.
There were many international organisation’s, universities and other groups that shared on their current efforts to minimize the quantity of sargassum seas weed in the ocean.
A key focus of the conference was on developing an economy around sargassum seaweed, exploring its potential uses for fertilizers, building blocks, animal feed, and more. The event was informative, with hopes for an actionable plan and necessary funding to tackle the sargassum issue on our shores.
Some sessions were organized into specialized groups that addressed topics such as best practices for collecting and storing sargassum, its applications in agriculture, energy generation through biofuels, and its use in the cosmetics industry. Many institutions have already begun utilizing sargassum, presenting their past work and future plans for scaling these efforts across the Caribbean.
Many of these uses of Sargassum seaweed has already been started by these institutions and there presentation were based on the word they have already done and how they are planning on upscaling that process not only in their region but the Caribbean.
It was evident that over the years, sargassum has had a detrimental impact on Caribbean countries like Grenada, particularly affecting the tourism sector, a vital part of the economy. A thought-provoking question raised during the conference was, “Do we have sargassum to sell?” This implies that there should be enough sargassum in our oceans to be collected that can be used and turned into and economy. Presenters emphasized the urgent need for funding and action from relevant institutions, underscoring that the time to act is now.
